Salsa, amalgamated by the Puerto Ricans and the Nuyoricans in El Barrio Spanish Harlem, was influenced by early Moorish and Spanish culture, the Sephardic community and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. This didactic concert will trace the origins of salsa music; discuss the dispersal of stringed instruments from Spain into the New World in the 15th century and resulting connection to Catholicism and salsa. Included will be a live musical ensemble with performances on the bata drums, the Puerto Rican cuatro, and the Afro-Cuban drum triad used in salsa (conga, bongo and timbal).  Program Details

MOBIA Hosts Award Winning Director and Composer, Elizabeth Swados

On Sunday, January 10, 2010, MOBIA hosted the talented Elizabeth Swados and musicians in the Main Gallery. The group performed songs from Bible Women, a collection of songs written by Liz Swados in 1995, about Jewish heroines such as Lilith, Sarah and Ruth. Elizabeth Swados, a faculty member at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and renowned musician, director, and composer, has received five Tony Award nominations and three Obie Awards for her theatrical productions. MOBIA Featured in CBS Special
