Public Programs
MOBIA offers concerts, lectures, film screenings and special events to complement each exhibition. Family programs enable families to share in the creative process while exploring an aspect of the current exhibition. Check this page for updated information.
Sacred scriptures, hymns, myths, holy personages, and rituals are among the many influences, both positive and negative, inspiring artistic expression. Altered Religious Texts, on display in MOBIA's Education Gallery though September 27, explores the ways in which artists use the very pages of inspiring texts as the "canvas" for their work. Join the artists to celebrate and discuss their works with food and wine.
Program Details & Registration InformationThe task of reading and interpreting the Bible is complex. Walter Melion, Ph.D., co-curator for the exhibition and Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Art History at Emory University, explores this topic as he decodes several prints from the exhibition. For example, in Balaam and the Angel in a Panoramic Landscape, Maarten van Heemskerck uses a new pictorial format and a relatively new subject - the biblical landscape - to explore the theme of prophecy in the complex scriptural text from Numbers 22 - 24. Other works discussed include Jan Swart van Groningen's Christ Preaching from the Ship and several emblems from Benito Arias Montano's Monuments of Human Salvation.
Lectures are free with the price of admission, and always free for MOBIA members.
Join visiting artist Vickie Fremont as she explores African crafts and traditions with sculptural puppets composed of textiles and recycled materials. Families will create their own puppet and learn about the history of recycling among traditional African artists. Ms. Fremont's newest exhibition of work, Re...Re-Cycle, Re-Create, Re-Imagine is on view in the MOBIA atrium through September 27th. Suitable for ages 6-12.
This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Children must be accompanied by an adult. $5 per child; no charge for MOBIA members and adult chaperones. Includes museum admission.
Re...Re-Cycle, Re-Create, Re-Imagine and supporting programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.
