Kathryn Smith, Associate Professor of Art History at New York University, discusses the Taymouth Hours, a manuscript she argues was commissioned by a queen of England as a betrothal gift for a young princess. In the process Dr. Smith will help us understand the role of women in the Middle Ages as patrons and readers of luxury books.

Concert Series

The female vocal ensemble Trio Eos will perform medieval works of chant and polyphony related to selected objects in the exhibition. The repertory on this program will reflect subjects such as Christ, the Virgin Mary and the saints.

Steve Bowman, Professor of Judaic Studies, University of Cincinnati Professor Bowman will look at the history of Jews in Greece - their ancient origins, their contribution to Jewish culture, and fate within the larger Christian community. This lecture will relate both to MOBIA's main exhibition in its discussion of the Byzantine Empire, and to Before the Flame Goes Out. Co-sponsored by the JCC Manhattan.

Scholars from diverse perspectives will reconsider the connections between art, religion and culture in the Middle Ages while asserting the era's relevance to the present day.

Vincent Giordano will screen a rough cut of his film documenting the Romaniote communities in Ioannina, Greece, and in New York City. The screening will be accompanied by a discussion with the artist.
